Best Robot Vacuums for Apartments

A budget robot, a mapping robot or a self-emptying robot: which suits an apartment depends on your floors, your pets and where the dock can go.

The short answer

  • One or two rooms of hard floor, tight budget: a budget robot without mapping.
  • A whole apartment with several rooms: a slim mapping robot.
  • A shedding pet and no wish to empty a bin daily: a self-emptying robot, if the dock fits.

First check a robot suits your home at all. Robot vacuum or cordless stick answers that in five questions.

Robot vacuum types for apartments. Budget, no mapping: One or two rooms of hard floor. Slim mapping: Whole apartment; cleans in rows. Self-emptying: Pets; needs room for a tall dock. Every robot: Clear cables and socks before each run

Three checks before you compare models

  1. Height under your furniture. Measure the gap under the sofa and bed. Many robots are around 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall; models with a raised sensor on top are taller.
  2. Where the dock goes. It needs floor space by a socket with clear space in front. A self-emptying dock needs much more.
  3. Your floors. Hard floors and low rugs suit every robot. Thick rugs and tassels stop many.

Where they differ

Size and fit

Budget robots are often the slimmest. Mapping robots with a laser sensor on top are taller, which matters under low sofas. The robot itself is similar for self-emptying models; the dock is the difference, often standing well over a foot tall.

Cleaning

Mapping robots clean in neat rows and know where they have been, so they finish faster and miss less. Budget robots move in patterns and bump their way around, which is fine in a single open room and frustrating in several.

Running costs

All robots need new brushes and filters over time. Self-emptying docks add replacement bags. Electricity use is small; check a model with the electricity cost calculator.

Noise

A robot can run while you are out, which matters more in an apartment than its exact volume. Self-emptying docks are loud for the few seconds they empty.

The picks in detail

Best for hard floors, clear floor space and pet hair

Slim mapping robot vacuum with a compact dock

A robot vacuum that maps the room and cleans in rows on a schedule. This is a type of product, not one model. The button opens the retailer's results for it, so compare a few before you choose.

What we like

  • Cleans while you are out
  • Reaches under furniture it is low enough to fit beneath
  • Daily runs keep pet hair down

What to know

  • Cables, socks and rug tassels must be off the floor first
  • Cannot clean sofas, shelves or stairs
  • The dock needs floor space by a socket; self-emptying docks are tall and wide

Best for pet owners who want to empty less often

A mapping robot with a dock that empties its bin into a bag automatically. This is a type of product, not one model. The button opens the retailer's results for it, so compare a few before you choose.

What we like

  • Bin empties itself for weeks
  • Mapping cleans in rows
  • Good for daily pet hair

What to know

  • Dock is tall and wide: measure the space
  • Replacement bags are an ongoing cost

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not clearing the floor. Cables, socks and phone chargers end most runs early.
  • Ignoring rug tassels. Fold them under or mark the rug as a no-go zone.
  • Never cleaning the brushes. Hair wraps the brush roll and cuts pick-up. Check it weekly if you have pets.
  • Expecting it to do everything. No robot cleans sofas, shelves or stairs; keep a handheld.

Preparing your home

Robot vacuums work best on clear floors. Before each run, pick up cables, socks and pet toys; lift light rugs with tassels; and close doors to rooms you want skipped. Most apps let you set no-go zones on the map for pet bowls or a corner with cables.

Looking after it

  • Empty the bin after each run, unless it has a self-empty base.
  • Cut hair off the brush roll weekly.
  • Wipe the sensors and charging contacts monthly.
  • Replace side brushes and filters as the maker suggests.

Noise and schedules

Run it when you are out, or at a quiet time if you share walls. Many apps have a quieter mode for daytime use.

Robot or stick?

A robot keeps floors tidy day to day, but it misses corners, stairs and sofa cushions. Many small homes do best with both: a robot for floors and a cordless stick for everything else. Robot vacuum or cordless stick compares them.

Which should you choose?

Measure the gaps and the dock space, then choose the simplest robot that covers your rooms. Mapping is worth paying for if you have more than one room. For the rest of your routine, see the apartment cleaning guide.

How we chose

These are research-based recommendations: we compared published specifications, maker documentation and the features that matter in a small home. We have not tested them hands-on. Most picks are types of product rather than single models, so the buttons open the retailer's results; compare a few listings before you buy, in your own country's store.

Frequently asked questions

Is a robot vacuum worth it in an apartment?

If you have clear hard floors or a pet, usually yes, because it cleans every day without you. If most of your floor is under low furniture or thick rugs, a cordless stick is the better buy.

Do I need mapping?

Mapping robots clean in rows and finish faster, and you can mark no-go areas in the app. Budget robots without mapping work in one or two small rooms but miss spots.

Are self-emptying docks worth it?

For pet owners, often. They empty the robot's bin into a bag for weeks at a time, but they are tall, wide and need replacement bags.
