How We Evaluate Products
We want you to know exactly what stands behind a recommendation on SmartLivingHut.
Two kinds of recommendation
Research-based recommendation. We have not used the product ourselves. We compared published specifications, maker manuals and support documents, warranty terms, safety certifications and patterns in owner feedback across retailers. This tells you a lot about fit, features and common problems, but it cannot replace living with a product.
Hands-on tested. We used the product ourselves in a real home for long enough to judge it, and we describe what we did.
Every product card and buying guide states which of the two applies. We never present research as testing.
What we look at
The criteria depend on the product, and usually include:
- Features: what it does, and what is missing.
- Performance: how well it does its main job, from test data or documented specifications.
- Ease of use: setup, controls, maintenance and cleaning.
- Design and space: footprint, storage size and how it fits a small home.
- Noise: published noise levels where relevant.
- Energy use: rated power and efficiency labels.
- Durability: materials, replaceable parts and known failure points.
- Warranty and support: length and terms, by country.
- Value: what you get for the price compared with close alternatives.
- Who it suits: and, just as important, who should choose something else.
Scores
Some products carry an editorial score out of 5. It is our overall judgment against the criteria above, not an average of customer ratings. Products without a score have not been scored; we do not guess.
Prices and availability
Prices change often. Where we show a price, we also show when we checked it. The retailer's page always has the current price. Retailers and availability differ between the United States and the United Kingdom, so links adapt to the country you choose at the top of the page.
How products are chosen
Editors choose which products to cover. Brands and retailers cannot pay to be included in a recommendation. If a maker supplies a sample, the product card says so.
Keeping guides current
Buying guides are re-checked on a regular schedule for price, availability, broken links, specification changes and newer competing products.
