How it works

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is 1,000 watts used for one hour. The calculator multiplies the appliance’s power by the hours you use it, then by your price per kWh.

Getting good numbers

  • Your price per kWh is on your bill or tariff. Enter it in whole currency units: 28.5 pence or cents is 0.285.
  • The wattage on a rating label is the maximum. Fridges, heaters with thermostats and washing machines cycle on and off, so they use less than the label suggests.
  • For a real measurement, use a plug-in energy monitor or a smart plug with energy monitoring for a week.
  • Standing charges and taxes are not included.
