Air Purifier Room Size Guide
Enter your room size to find the minimum clean air delivery rate (CADR) to look for.
Enter the room's length and width.
How it works
CADR, the clean air delivery rate, measures how much filtered air a purifier delivers. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) suggests a smoke CADR, in cubic feet per minute, of at least two-thirds of the roomβs floor area in square feet. That guideline assumes a ceiling of up to 8 feet, so the calculator scales the figure up for taller rooms.
Using the result
- Compare the figure with the smoke CADR on the productβs specification. Higher is fine; lower means the purifier is undersized for the room.
- Check the noise level on the setting that delivers that CADR. Many purifiers only reach it at full speed.
- The US Environmental Protection Agency advises avoiding air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone.
- A purifier removes particles. It does not replace ventilation or fix damp.
